yoga on the labyrinth at Grace Cathedral
yoga

The practice of yoga is very diverse and can be anywhere from extremely gentle to quite athletic. In this class, we practice at a gentle pace that is appropriate for beginners as well as more experience students. No prior experience with yoga is necessary.

Unlike a typical yoga studio, the cathedral does not provide yoga mats, props or blankets. It is also quite cold on the marble floor, so being prepared can make your practice much more safe and enjoyable.

The gentle yoga poses and breathing techniques are designed to slowly stretch the body while at the same time quieting the mind and opening the heart. Rather than focusing on a workout, this class is designed to bring students to a more contemplative state, which is also reflected in the beauty of the cathedral.

If you have physical limitations, injuries or medical conditions, please be sure to discuss this class with your healthcare provider as well as with the teacher.

yoga 101 If you are new to yoga and struggling to make sense of everything, you are not along. Starting a yoga practice can feel very overwhelming in the beginning. Taking an introductory workshop can be very helpful. Yoga Tree, a local yoga studio offers a weekly intro to yoga workshop that covers the basic poses, breathing techniques and allignment principles.

body prayer

Be at peace with your own soul, then heaven and earth will be at peace with you, Enter eagerly into the treasure house that is within you, you will see the things that are in heaven; for there is but one single entry to them both. The ladder that leads to the Kingdom is hidden within your soul—Dive into yourself, and in your soul you will discover the stairs by which to ascend.
—Saint Isacc of Nineveh
